Jackie Stewarts 1973 championship winning Tyrrell-Cosworth
With the push to get more privateers onto the grid for 2010, the FIA has upped the field to a 26 car grid. The leaving of Toyota and BMW has left the door open to smaller privateer teams powered by cosworth engines, a combination which for so long was the backbone and won so many championships under the Lotus, Brabham, Mclaren and Tyrrell names. It can be seen as bringing F1 down to a level to reconnect the sport to the people but can these teams really compete with F1's top teams. Even Brawn's 2009 championship escapades were really financed by Honda's yen before pulling the plug. So do the new privateers stand a chance of surviving in the piranha club?
